Cycling in Bulgaria - Rhodope Mountains

The Rhodopes are a large mountain mass spread in the Southeast of Bulgaria. Virgin pine forests, many rivers and extraordinary rock figures are characteristic of this mountain. Our itinerary passes trough several middle-height peaks, a number of unique natural phenomena, small cozy villages, old roman roads and cultural monuments.

CYCLING IN THE RHODOPES

Cycling Program - 8 days

            Requirements
The tourists will bike along asphalt-covered roads. A lot of the stages go through coniferous forests at a height less than 1800m. Tourists should be able to bike for 4 to 5 hours a day (max 90km along asphalt roads).

            Route
Day 1: Sofia to Plovdiv (150 km/93 miles):
A flight to Sofia. A transporter van will take you from Sofia Airport to the town of Plovdiv (166 m/544 ft). Overnight at Leipzig hotel (3 stars).
Day 2: Plovdiv to Velingrad (90 km/56 miles):
You are biking along a level asphalt-covered road to the village of Varvara for 55 km/34 miles. After climbing along an asphalt-covered road you arrive at the Velingrad town (760 m/2492 ft). The town is famous for his warm springs and the artificial lake "Kleptuza" which is situated among beautiful nature. You spend the night at private lodgings.
Day 3: Velingrad to Dospat (70 km/43 miles):
On the way to Sarnitsa (1200 m/3935 ft) you overcome a height of 1500m. The next 20 km/12 miles you bike along an asphalt road round the Dospat dam-lake to the town of Dospat (1200 m/3935 ft). Overnight at a private hotel.
Day 4: Dospat to Trigrad (53 km/33 miles):
The next stage (25 km/15 miles) between Dospat and the village of Teshel (700 m/2295 ft) is along an asphalt road. Cycling to the cave "Yagodinska" (1100 m/3607 ft), a tour of the cave and back to the village of Teshel (16 km/10 miles). On the way to the Trigrad village (1200 m/3935 ft) you cycle through the most majestic gorge in Bulgaria - the "Trigrad gorge" (12 km/7 miles). Near the village you visit an interesting nature phenomenon - the cave "Devil Throat". Overnight at private hotel.
Day 5: Trigrad to Devin (40 km/25 miles):
In the morning you are cycling back to the village of Teshel. The natural reserve "Kotlinite" in the valley of Mugla river (the road is a cart-track) is to be visited. You will spend the night at a private hotel in the town of  Devin (700 m/2295 ft).
Day 6: Devin to Pamporovo (40 km/25 miles):
The day begins with sightseeing of the architectural museum-village Shiroka Luka. After 13 km/8 miles of biking you reach the world-famous winter resort of Pamporovo (1450 m/4755 ft). The volunteers can visit the Snezhanka peak (1926 m/6315 ft). There is a TV tower with a nice cafe at the top. Overnight at private hotel.
Day 7: Pamporovo to Plovdiv (90 km/56 miles):
You cycle downward to the town of Plovdiv. On the way you can visit the Bachkovo Monastery which is the second biggest and important one in Bulgaria. In Plovdiv you will visit the old part (18th-19th century) of the town and the antique theatre (2nd century). Overnight at Leipzig hotel.
Day 8: Plovdiv to Sofia (150 km/93 miles):
The tourists travel by van to Sofia Airport. Flight back home.

Optimal season: May till October Group size: min 1; max 15 REMARKS Normally our company ensures:      - full board;      - Accompanying of the group by a foreign language speaking guide from Sofia to Sofia;      - Transfer - from Sofia to Sofia;     - Accompanying car during the tour;    - Overnight as mentioned in the program - hotels, private lodgings (2-bed rooms).
